The Myth of Modern Macedonia: inventing an identity
This is an essay by John Melville-Jones, Emeritus Professor/Senior Honorary Research Fellow, Classics and Ancient History, The University of Western Australia. Melville-Jones is well known for his work on ancient Greek coinage, and especially that of the Macedonians. He has also worked extensively with archival material of the 15th and 16th centuries shedding insights on Byzantine history. He is thus in a very good position to trace the evolution of the attempt to appropriate the ancient Greek Macedonian identity by the modern residents of FYROM.
